U.S. SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce clarified at the Bitcoin 2025 conference that the $TRUMP meme coin falls outside the agency’s regulatory scope. The token, tied to former President Donald Trump, lacks the characteristics of a security under federal law.
Peirce drew parallels to NFTs, which similarly captured market attention without triggering securities regulations. While the SEC retains authority over transactions involving such assets, the tokens themselves remain unmonitored.
The announcement comes as lawmakers scrutinize political figures’ crypto engagements. Peirce cautioned investors that regulatory exemptions don’t imply protection, noting meme coins’ notorious volatility.
